...what is Bible Quizzing?

Bible Quizzing is an exciting game based on Scripture memorization.

From August to June of each school year, students up through age 21 to commit the Word of God to memory. Parents work daily with their children to memorize Scripture at home, coaches practice with their church teams each week, and monthly district tournaments prepare teams for the National ALJC Bible Quizzing Tournament in June.

All churches pastored by an ALJC licensed minister are free to participate. It is an effective and dynamic way to hide the Word of God in our hearts, as Scripture directs.

Bible Quizzing is a powerful, life-changing ministry that combines memorization and study of the Word of God with teamwork, fun, and competition.

In this ministry, churches are blessed, families are transformed, and parents are empowered as we answer the call of God in Deuteronomy 6 to keep the Word of God in our hearts and “teach them diligently” unto our children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Verse listings are announced in late July or early August each year. You can begin memorization anytime thereafter. Our suggestion is to begin weekly practices with your teams in September or October. Your district BQ Coordinator is encouraged to schedule monthly tournaments: some districts begin in the fall, others in January, depending on district participation. The season ends with the ALJC National tournament at the General Ministry Conference each year.

As of January 1 of the current quiz year: Beginners are age 5-8,* Juniors 9-11, and Seniors 12-21. Verses to memorize are assigned according to division. *If there are not enough beginners to form a team, beginners will practice and compete with juniors.

One coach, 2-5 quizzers, and a supportive pastor. A church can sponsor an unlimited number of teams. A coach can also be the pastor, parent, or another caring adult. Parents are essential in this ministry, and are encouraged to support their child(ren) at home in memorization and review, and volunteer at practices and tournaments as assistant coaches, judges, scorekeepers, etc.

First, talk to your pastor and ask for his support. Every team must be sponsored by an ALJC-licensed pastor. Second, do your research. There are many articles, videos, and other resources on upcquiz.com and seniorbiblequizzing.com that help clarify what this ministry is and does. Third, ask a friend! There are many seasoned BQ veterans who want to help! You can find these on Facebook on the ALJC Bible Quizzing group. Fourth, if your district has a BQ Coordinator (appointed by your District Student Ministries president), contact him/her for information about district Bible Quizzing events and tournaments.

It changes each year, and is determined by the UPCI Senior and Junior Bible Quizzing committees. For the senior division, we use the Intermediate verse listing found on seniorbiblequizzing.com/resources , and our junior verse list is found on https://stores.bqmaterials.com/2026-general-information/ . These verse listings can also be found in the ALJC Bible Quizzing Facebook group (under the “Files” tab). The new verse listings are usually posted around the first of August.

Junior division: study materials are available to order for the current year beginning August 1 from www.bqmaterials.com. Senior division: Intermediate materials are available from pentecostalpublishing.com or bqmaterials.com.

Generally, each quizzer benefits from a copy of all the verses (found in a study guide, a full-sized laminated list, or a set of ‘pocket verses’), and a set of color-coded flash cards (or a set per family). Each coach is encouraged to have a set of laminated color-coded verse sheets, a rules manual, and a packet of score sheets. Coaches will also need to purchase quiz sets (questions) from bqmaterials.com  or another question writer. There are many more items you can buy that may help: coloring books (Junior and Beginner), music CDs (with a song for each verse), and devotionals. These can be very helpful, though not essential.

The computer-based USB system can be purchased at www.upcquiz.com (you need your own Windows laptop for this with at least one USB port).
